A few weeks ago, I had an awesome opportunity to hang out with my friend LeAnn and her daughter Alex. I was also testing the Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM that I had on loan from CPS. I love relaxed shoots where we get to hang out and find interesting locations and textures. The following pictures are a few of my favorites from our time together. I’m looking forward to spring when we can get back together and take some of LeAnn’s entire family.

Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the more critical choices in planning your wedding. Wow, what an awesome day. It’s great to work with other photographers. I was available to help out my good friends Sam and Stephanie of (www.catchlightweddingphotos.com). Stephanie and I shot a beautiful wedding for Tad and Stephanie (bride, not photographer) at the amazing Mildred B. Cooper Chapel in Bella Vista while Sam shot a wedding in Oklahoma City. Stephanie and I had a blast shooting together, even if she did eat the last piece of chicken!

Take Time to Breathe

I thought this was super cool. I truly love photography and find inspiration in a variety of places. I found this video to be quite inspiring. It doesn’t matter what we do to pay the bills, but we all make a difference. It may not be feeding the starving. It may not be curing HIV or AIDS. It may not even register to you. It may be the second of encouragement you offer at just the right moment. It may be 22 seconds of listening to someone who can’t find a friend. It might be that one real or genuine moment when you’re caught off guard. So whatever it is that you do, do it with an open mind to the things and people who come in and out of our lives daily. Enjoy the blessings God gives us every single day!

So, starting today, go out there and find what you uniquely bring to the table. Leverage your greatest strengths and passions. Recognize too, that we all suck, but maybe today you suck just a little bit less than yesterday. And tomorrow…maybe a little less than today. The only thing we can change about the past is how we recall it. Tomorrow is a brand-new day! Make the most of it.

Ariel | Senior

I first photographed Ariel on October 20, 2005, and it was one of the most important shoots I’ve ever had. It was my first professional shoot. I’ve shot Ariel several times since then, our most recent was for senior portraits. The first picture below is from our first shoot together.

I love shooting with fixed focal length lenses, and Paul from LensProToGo had just hooked me up with the awesome Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L. If you need gear you don’t already have or you don’t need to own due to a special project, give Paul a call. He’ll call you back!

Texas School of Professional Photography

This year was my second to attend the Texas School of Professional Photography. Texas School is one of the PPA’s largest affiliate schools, with nearly 1,000 photographers in attendance. The week long course is packed with information, parties, and a huge trade show. One instructor for one week, and I chose John-Michael Hannan who turned out to be a great choice. John-Michael very quickly moved us from the classroom to more true to life locations. He also proved to be very entertaining (like showing how NOT to adjust a dress). I had a great week, and because John-Michael’s style is very different from mine, everything we did resulted in a lot of learning and perspective. For example, location lighting became very simple, and I’ve already begun using his techniques.

On the way home, I spent a considerable amount of time with former PPA President Robert Lloyd and my fantastic instructor from last year, Bry Cox.
